As with any car, the Renault Mégane uses antifreeze to cool the engine. Over time, it loses its properties and must be replaced. If replacement is not carried out in time, heat transfer may deteriorate, resulting in serious damage.
Renault Megan coolant replacement stages
Proper replacement of antifreeze should include not only the stages of draining and filling, but also flushing the system from the remnants of the old fluid. This is done so that the new fluid does not have foreign impurities. This will contribute to the preservation of its properties throughout the entire period of operation.
The model has been produced for more than 20 years and during this time has managed to change several generations:
- Renault Megane 1 (Renault Megane I, Restyling);
- Renault Megane 2 (Renault Megane II, Restyling);
- Renault Megane 3 (Renault Megane III, Restyling);
- Renault Megane 4 (Renault Megane IV, Restyling).
Of course, there have been changes in the cooling system over the years of production, but for the most part, the procedure will be similar. Distinctive features may be drain holes located in different places.
We will consider the instructions for replacing Renault Megane 3, because this generation is currently the most popular.
Draining the coolantTo drain antifreeze, it is better to find a room with a well, since some of the actions will be carried out from below, and it is more convenient to do this from the well. So, the room is found, we drive the car, let it cool down a bit and immediately proceed to the replacement:
- First of all, we must remove the plastic cover or protection to access the drain cock located at the bottom of the radiator (Fig. 1).Fig.1 Plastic protection
- It may happen that the plastic sleeve cannot be unscrewed, as part of the fixing bolts will be displaced. Therefore, there is a radical method, in the area of \u2b\uXNUMXbthe crane we make an incision and bend the plastic (Fig. XNUMX). The drain is located on the left side, in the direction of travel of the machine. Rice. 2 Plastic notch
- However, having reached the drain tap, we put a hose with a diameter of about 8 mm on its spout. We lower the other end of the hose into a specially prepared container with a volume of at least 6 liters and unscrew the valve (Fig. 3). The valve is unscrewed with great effort to tear it off and make the first few turns, you can use pliers. Fig.3 Drain valve
- The fluid drain has begun and we move on to the actions under the hood. We unscrew and remove the plug from the expansion tank, after which the drain flow will increase (Fig. 4). Fig.4 Expansion tank cap
- To completely drain the antifreeze, it is necessary to unscrew the outlet valve in the thermostat area (Fig. 5). Fig.5 Purge valve on the thermostat
- And also in the branch that goes to the stove (Fig. 6). Rice. 6 Air injection into the chimney
This is the entire drain process on this model, as the manufacturer did not provide a drain hole in the engine block.
Flushing the cooling systemIn order to completely remove the old antifreeze from the Renault Megane 3 cooling system, it must be flushed. So we will replace it with distilled water, and when filling we will use a concentrate to ensure the right freezing temperature.
We unscrew the drain plug and start pouring water into the system through the expansion tank until it comes out of the fitting located on the thermostat. We close it and continue to fill it until it comes out of the stove nozzle. We also turn over, add water to the level and close the tank lid.
Now you need to warm up the car to operating temperature, after turning on the fan for the second time, you can turn it off. We wait a little for the engine temperature to drop and drain the water. We carry out the procedure 3-4 times, after which the water will merge almost transparent, which will indicate the result achieved.
If the vent cap is accidentally lost, it can be used as a replacement for any wheel that screws into the inflation nozzle.
Filling without air pocketsAfter a complete flushing of the system, we dilute the concentrate, taking into account the water not drained into the engine. We start by filling the system, according to the same principle as when flushing:
- Pour in antifreeze until it comes out of the thermostat fitting and turn it.
- We continue to fill until it comes out of the fitting of the stove pipe and close it too.
- Fill up to the level of the expansion tank and tighten its cap.
- We drive antifreeze through the system, warming up the engine to operating temperature, with an increase in speed.
- We turn off the engine, after cooling, check the level, top up if necessary.
Also, the level should be checked after replacement, in the first days of operation. It should be between the MIN and MAX marks. And if everything is done correctly, air congestion should not form.
Frequency of replacement, which antifreeze to fill
According to maintenance, antifreeze in Renault Megane 3 should be changed every 4 years or after 90 thousand kilometers. After this period, the properties of the coolant are lost. And constant use without replacement can lead to various problems.
There are many different types of coolants on the market, but for this car, the manufacturer recommends using an original product. Available as a concentrate called Renault Glaceol RX Type D.
If you need ready-made antifreeze, then you can pay attention to the Coolstream NRC Type D analogue. It has the necessary approvals and is also supplied to carriers as a first fill.
When choosing antifreeze, you can pay attention to the products of any manufacturer. The main thing to remember is that the coolant is not selected by color, but by observing the tolerances of the car manufacturer. For this car, you can pay attention to Hepu products. In the line of which there are products that meet the Renault-Nissan specification.

When changing the coolant, close attention should be paid to inspecting the system for small spots. If there are small cracks in the pipes, they should be replaced, and the clamps should also be replaced if they are worn.
It will not be superfluous to replace the cap of the expansion tank, since the valve located in it can jam from time to time. If this happens when closed, you will not be able to relieve excess pressure, which will lead to leaks. A leak can form anywhere, the weakest.
