In 2015, the American indie-folk band The Oh Hellos released a joyful and upbeat medieval-inspired song called “Soldier, Poet, King.” The song describes 3 popular literary figures or tropes: soldier, poet, and king. With a repetitive beat and melody, the track is catchy and easy to follow, making it no surprise that it became a TikTok trend 7 years later.

The original song is rooted deeply in Christianity, with each figure representing different times Jesus came to earth; however, the same character traits and principles can be applied to modern literature. So, what exactly is a soldier, poet, or king personality type?

Soldiers are passionate individuals who thrive in structured environments. In the song, the soldier and his sword reflect the description of Jesus first coming to earth in the Old Testament: a powerful force that’ll punish sinners and establish justice. As a personality, the soldier is purposeful, respectful, and content. They believe in peace but are willing to physically fight for what is right.

Poets are imaginative and intelligent creators. The Oh Hellos highlight that the poet “will slay you with His tongue” because his weapon is his word, symbolizing Jesus’s will to spread the word of God. The personality of a poet may be sensitive, but this sensitivity helps them change the world.

Kings are responsible leaders that carry mighty burdens. The king’s crown is described as a ring of thorns in the song. Not only does this reflect Jesus’s crucifixion, but it also represents the painful burdens and sacrifices that come with being a leader. Responsibility weighs heavily on a king’s shoulders, and they believe that their duties and expectations outweigh their own dreams and desires.
