Who Is Responsible

The suspect is Dekarlos Brown (24). He has a criminal record and an official diagnosis of schizophrenia. His family had previously tried to secure his involuntary hospitalization, but the system failed to prevent the tragedy.

  • Initially charged with first-degree murder.
  • On September 9, the U.S. Department of Justice added a federal charge: “Committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system.”
  • This is one of the most serious crimes in the federal code, punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty.
